We’re now adding other avenues of entertainment to the platform – the beta launch of our gaming feature has received tremendous response and given how gaming has become mainstream in India in the last two years, it was a natural fit for our audience. Here on, our plans include expanding our footprint in international markets as well.”

Additionally, the report says, competition in the video streaming space will bolster better user experiences as well as better and much more diverse content  to drive growth in downloads, usage and revenue.

Likee: A new avenue for Bollywood to promote movies

In India, global short-video making platform ‘Likee’ is experiencing a phenomenal growth owing to a strong local network and a large user base, especially in the small cities as well as in the rural regions. With the pivotal youth-centric approach and content, Likee has emerged as a new platform for movie production houses to promote their movies among the young movie enthusiasts. Some of the big banner movies such as Dabangg3, Panipat, Chhichhore, Housefull 4 and many others had collaborated with Likee for their promotional activities.

Bollywood acts as a source of inspiration, especially for youth who naturally respond to any opportunity that allows them to associate with their favourite actors, movies, singers, and others. It is worth noting that, Likee- the short video platform enables movie makers to access the hard-to-reach audiences easily that helps them to garner better impressions and attention from the target audience. It is now easy to capture the reaction of the audience sitting in far-flung areas across the country, that too in detail.

The most exciting aspect of Likee platform is the wide range of easy-to-use tools and features that enable users to create dynamic and entertaining videos. These tools also present a game-changing opportunity for movie production houses to plan highly interactive movie promotional activities for their upcoming movies. Some of the tools that are widely popular among users and can be easily tapped by moviemakers are:

  1. Lip-syncing: Indian youth that is highly inspired by movie stars love to talk, look, sing and mimic like their favourite celebrities. Here, Likee’s lip-sync feature plays an important role as it allows users to be as close to their favourite actor as possible. Moviemakers have an incredible opportunity to popularize the dialogues or song excerpts of their upcoming movies among the young movie enthusiasts. For example, Fox Star Hindi had collaborated with Likee platform to promote their new movie Chhichhore that highlights the lifestyle of today’s youth. Many dialogues and song lyrics from the movie that click the best with today’s young generation were integrated as background sounds for users to create innovative dub videos. Likee users created entertaining videos using the movie’s background sound that garnered millions of views. Taking the excitement to the next level, the Likee users share their dubbed Likee videos onto other social media platforms that helps the moviemakers to amplify the movie promotions.
  2. AR filters to try Bollywood look and style: Millennials love to experiment with their looks, and mostly they feel inspired by the new hairstyles, unique eyewear, makeup styles, and other fashion trends that are popular among the bollywood stars. For instance, Aamir Khan’s ‘Ghajini look’ or Salman Khan’s ‘Tere Naam look’ became extremely popular as soon as the movie posters were released. Likee is allowing movie makers to present a unique opportunity for users to try their favourite actors’ looks virtually and also create videos with that looks to entertain their followers or friends. Recently, Mission Mangal movie, Bollywood’s first space film, was rendered as an important benchmark in the Indian film industry. To amplify this message, the moviemakers collaborated with Likee to create a virtual astronaut suit that video creators used to look like an astronaut while the integration of iconic dialogue from the movie in the background, added to the charm of creating a magical video.
  3. Create #Challenge to spread awareness: As a trend, cause-based movies have become mainstream and very popular among Millennials. Moviemakers are utilizing this phase to highlight as many issues as possible to create awareness and encourage people, mostly youth, to alter their ways to bring a positive change in society. Considering the large user base of the young audience from the metro as well as smaller cities, Likee is the most viable platform for moviemakers to connect and inspire the youth. For instance, a movie with a focus on the importance of cleanliness can run #SwachchBharatChallenge in which users can upload a transition video of before and after cleaning a small area around their homes.

Similarly, there are many tools and techniques on Likee platform that allow moviemakers to engage uniquely with the young movie enthusiasts and allow them access to Bollywood resources which they can integrate into their videos. The platform has also recently introduced an exciting new app function, FaceFace which utilizes Likee’s mature AI technology.

The popularity of short video-making platforms is also gaining momentum among brands as it is with movie production houses as these platforms give marketers a high impact medium to reach users in the metro as well as small cities. As per a recent report by Forrester, the short video Ad spending in the Asia Pacific will grow at CAGR of 25.5% to touch $6.5 billion in 2020 from $2.1 billion. Soon, these numbers are expected to experience explosive growth. Hence, the new age short-video making platforms are emerging as one of the most effective medium in today’s era to connect with youth and promote movies.

Supreme Court agrees to look into video mobile application TikTok row

The Supreme Court said it will look into the order passed by the Madras High Court directing an interim ban on the video mobile application ‘TikTok’.

Senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi sought urgent listing of the case. He said that the application had been downloaded on a major scale, has numerous users and an ex-parte interim order was passed against the start-up.

Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi said he will look into the matter.

Last week, a bench of Justices N. Kirubakaran and S.S. Sundar passed an interim order issuing directions to the government to prohibit downloading the mobile application. It also directed the media not to broadcast the videos made using it.

The Madras High Court posed a query to the government. It asked whether the government will enact a statue, like the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act enacted by the US government, in order to prevent children becoming online victims.

AI couldn’t catch NZ attack video streaming; Facebook

Facing flak for failure to block the live broadcast of the New Zealand terrorist attack last week, Facebook on Thursday said that its Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools were not “perfect” to detect the horrific video.

Vowing to improve its technology, the social networking giant, however, ruled out adding a time delay to Facebook Live, similar to the broadcast delay sometimes used by TV stations.

“There are millions of Live broadcasts daily, which means a delay would not help address the problem due to the sheer number of videos,” Guy Rosen, Facebook’s Vice President of Integrity, said in a statement.

“More importantly, given the importance of user reports, adding a delay would only further slow down videos getting reported, reviewed and first responders being alerted to provide help on the ground,” Rosen added.

Strapped with a GoPro camera to his head, the gunman broadcast graphic footage of the New Zealand shooting via Facebook Live for 17 minutes, which was later shared in millions on other social media platforms, including Twitter and YouTube.

Fifty people were killed and dozens injured in the shootings at Al Noor Mosque and the Linwood Avenue Masjid in Christchurch on March 15 after 28-year-old Australian Brenton Tarrant opened indiscriminate firings.

The circulation of the video on social media platforms attracted widespread criticism from different quarters.

In a letter to CEOs of Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Microsoft, House Homeland Security Committee Chairman Bennie Thompson asked the technology companies to brief the US Congress on March 27 regarding their response to dissemination of the video on their platforms.

Thompson also warned the technology companies that unless they do better in removing violent content, the Congress could consider policies to bar such content on social media.

Facebook on Thursday said it was exploring how AI could help it react faster to this kind of content on a live streamed video.

“AI has made massive progress over the years and in many areas, which has enabled us to proactively detect the vast majority of the content we remove. But it’s not perfect.

“However, this particular video did not trigger our automatic detection systems,” Rosen said, referring to the New Zealand attack video.

Netflix not be selling subscriptions of Apple’s upcoming video service

Netflix CEO Reed Hastings has confirmed that the content-streaming platform will not be selling subscriptions to Apple’s upcoming video services.

The iPhone-maker is likely to introduce its video-streaming services on March 25.

“Apple is a great company. We want to have people watch our shows on our services,” Apple Insider quoted Hastings as saying in a Netflix press conference in Los Angeles on Monday.

Netflix is yet to adopt the most recent revamp of Apple’s TV app for iOS, hence the Hasting’s statement is not really unsurprising.

Defending Netflix’s decision of not adopting Apple TV as yet, Ted Sarandos, Chief Content Officer at the content-streaming platform said that their intentions have been moving away from the App Store subscription fees, the report said.

Sarandos highlighted that Apple TV was not an important source of revenue for Netflix anyway.

Apple is gearing up for its spring event that will be held at the Steve Jobs theatre on its Cupertino campus, during which the company is expected to finally announce its much-awaited video services.

While specifics are yet to be revealed, the as-yet-unannounced service is rumoured to incorporate both original content and options for users to subscribe to other services, the report noted.

Congress key meet vs Modi’s video conference on Thursday

As the Congress braces for a meeting of its key working committee and a massive rally here on Thursday where Priyanka Gandhi will deliver her first public address after being anointed party’s General Secretary, the BJP prepares to match this effort the same day with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s national video conference with lakhs of party workers.

Briefing the media here on Monday, Congress’s Gujarat unit chief Amit Chavda said they had requested party president Rahul Gandhi to convene a meeting of the Congress Working Committee (CWC), the party’s highest decision-making body, in Gujarat and he had agreed.

Rahul Gandhi, his mother and United Progressive Alliance chairperson Sonia Gandhi, former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and newly-inducted General Secretary for East Uttar Pradesh Priyanka Gandhi and AICC treasurer Ahmed Patel will be present at the meeting.

The meet will be followed by a Jan Sankalp Rally, where Priyanka Gandhi is expected to deliver her maiden public address after being inducted full time into the party affairs. Chief Ministers of all Congress-ruled states would also converge at this mega show of the party.

Determined to ensure the Opposition party does not hog the complete limelight in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s prized home state, the BJP will have Modi addressing lakhs of party workers through video-conferencing across 450 centres in Gujarat under its “Mera Booth Sabse Majboot” programme. Nationally the address will cover 15,000 places.

This will be preceded by the launch of a mass contact programme on Tuesday where 50,000 BJP workers will fan out across areas covered under 50,000 polling booths to propagate the central government’s public welfare schemes.

Announcing this here on Monday, State BJP Spokesman Bharat Pandya said on the same evening “Kamal Deep” event would be held where a lamp would be lighted across 47 lakh homes of party workers and beneficiaries of Central schemes.

The party’s entire top brass in the state would oversee this with Chief Minister Vijay Rupani being stationed at Dehgam and president Jitubhai Vaghani at his home district Bhavnagar. “Similarly, all top leaders have been assigned various locations, ” Pandya said.

Meanwhile, the party’s national general secretary in charge of Gujarat for Lok Sabha elections Om Mathur would arrive here on Tuesday for a four-day visit up to March 1.

While Prime Minister Modi’s national video conference would begin at 12.30 pm on Thursday, Chavda informed that Congress’s Sankalp Rally at Trimandir in Adalaj, located between Gujarat’s political capital Gandhinagar and commercial capital Ahmedabad, would start from 3 pm after the all-importamt CWC meeting.
