Chidambaram being hunted for exposing government: Priyanka Gandhi

Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra came out in support of former union minister P. Chidambaram — who currently facing action at the hands of CBI and ED in the INX Media case — saying the latter was being “hunted down” for speaking the truth which is “inconvenient to cowards”.

Priyanka said the party stands by Chidambaram. who has been used a notice by the CBI to appear before the investigation officer “within two hours?

Her strong support to Chidambaram, who has also been a home minister, comes a day after the Delhi High Court refused to grant him any protection from arrest in the INX media case.

“An extremely qualified and respected member of the Rajya Sabha, P Chidambaram ji has served our nation with loyalty for decades including as Finance Minister & Home Minister,” Priyanka Gandhi said in a tweet.

“He unhesitatingly speaks truth to power and exposes the failures of this government, but the truth is inconvenient to cowards so he is being shamefully hunted down. We stand by him and will continue to fight for the truth no matter what the consequences are,” she said.

Hours after the High Court ruling, a team of CBI officers landed at Chidambaram’s Jor Bagh residence to locate him, but left after not finding the leader there.

Chidambaram’s lawyer, Arshdeep Singh Khurana, has written to CBI after the agency put up a notice outside Chidambaram’s residence stating “the notice fails to mention the provision of law under which my client has been issued a notice to appear within 2 hours.”

Khurana added that his client had been permitted by SC to mention the urgent Special Leave Petition against the order before Court at 10:30 am today. “I, therefore, request you not to take any coercive action against my client till then&await the hearing at 10:30 am.”

Congress spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala also took to Twitter and shared a video in which the police can be seen taking the party”s state spokeperson Ravinder Sharma from the press conference along with them.

“Government claims total normalcy in J&K, blatantly and illegally arrests Congress chief spokesman Ravinder Sharma from Jammu while he was briefing the media and places PCC Chief Ghulam Ahmed Mir under house arrest. If this is normal, how are murder of democracy and seize defined?” he said in a tweet.

Pehlu Khan was beaten by a mob of cow vigilantes on April 1, 2017 on the suspicion of cattle smuggling.

Sonebhadra is now Catch-22 for Priyanka gandhi, Yogi

The Sonebhadra episode is turning into a Catch-22 situation for both, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.

Priyanka, who spent the night at the Chunar Guest House, said on Saturday morning that she would not return to Delhi without meetings the victims of the Sonebhadra carnage.

The Congress leader’s arrest — which district officials term “preventive detention” — has already spurred the Congress into action with the party planning to hold nationwide protests on Saturday.

Priyanka, at this stage cannot politically afford to retrace her steps and return to Delhi since that would reflect poorly on her party. Knowing her determination, and the response she is getting, it seems that she will prolong the dharna unless she is allowed to visit the victims’ families.

Yogi Adityanath, on the other hand, will not allow Priyanka to visit Sonebhadra. If he does, it will be a major moral victory for the Congress.

If Priyanka’s detention was a mistake, the BJP government will have to continue bearing the cross.

Top officials, till late on Friday night, tried to persuade the Congress leader to fill up the bail bond and return to Delhi.

“I will not pay a penny for the bail bond which they showed me on Friday night. I am ready to go to jail if this is what they want. I have not broken any rules. I even agreed to go to Sonebhadra with just two people so that the prohibitory orders are not violated,” she curtly told them.

Priyanka was reportedly asked to pay a bail amount of Rs 50,000 or face jail time of 14 days on Friday night.

“I did not break any law, nor did I commit any crime. In fact, I had made it clear that I am ready to meet the tribals alone if that is what the administration wants. Despite this, the administration has been doing this drama. The public is seeing everything. I consider bail in this matter completely immoral and I am not ready to pay it,” she said.

The Congress General Secretary apparently spent an uncomfortable night in the guest house but did not complain. Power supply in the guest house had been shut off late on Friday evening and was restored around midnight. Priyanka sat in the open with Congress workers, listening to their views.

Other Congress leaders, including legislature party leader Ajay Kumar Lallu also slept on the floor at the guest house.

District Magistrate Anurag Patel said that the power cut was part of routine load shedding.

Later in the night, senior Congress leader P.L. Punia reached Chunar to extend support to the Congress leaders. More leaders are expected to join Priyanka on Saturday.

It may be recalled that Priyanka had arrived in Varanasi on Friday morning and visited the Trauma Centre at BHU to meet those who had been injured in Wednesday’s massacre in Sonebhadra.

Priyanka, while she was on her way to Sonebhadra, was detained at Narayanpur in Mirzapur. She asked officials to show her the necessary orders for stopping her from going to Sonebhadra but officials merely said that they had verbal orders from the ‘top’.

Thereafter, Priyanka and other Congress leaders were taken to the Chunar Guest house.

Ten persons had been killed and two dozen injured in a caste clash over a land dispute in Murtiya village in Sonebhadra. Priyanka had come from Delhi to meet the victims’ families.

Priyanka Gandhi remains under detention in Uttar Pradesh

Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi remained in detention here on Saturday as she refused to fill the bail bond, 19 hours after she was driven to a guest house after she insisted on proceeding to Sonebhadra district in Uttar Pradesh where 10 people were killed in clashes over a land dispute on Wednesday.

She also described the killings of the members of the Gond tribe as “massacre”.

Late on Friday, some government officials also arrived at the Chunar guest house to ask the Congress leader to return to Delhi. However, she remained adamant.

“The Uttar Pradesh government has sent ADG Varanasi Brij Bhushan, Varanasi Commissioner Deepak Agarwal, Commissioner Mirzapur and DIG Mirzapur to tell me that I should return without meeting the victims’ families. They have not given me any reason or documents for detaining me,” Gandhi said in a tweet.

“I have made it clear to them that I have not come here to break any law but to meet the families and I won’t return without meeting them,” she said.

The officials then left the guest house at around 1.30 a.m.

Earlier on Friday, Priyanka Gandhi refused to fill the bail bond of Rs 50,000.

“I have not done anything wrong and so I will not fill the bail bond. District administration and the government is free to send me to jail if they want,” she said.

She has said that the administration informed her that she was detained under section 107/116 of the CrPC.

Gandhi was detained at the Chunar Guest House here after she was stopped from going to Murtiya village in Sonebhadra district. The police denied that she had been arrested.

The Congress leader arrived in Varanasi on Friday morning and met the injured persons admitted to the Trauma Centre of the Banaras Hindu University. When she proceeded towards Sonebhadra, her convoy was stopped on the Mirzapur border.

A defiant Gandhi then squatted on the ground with the Congress workers and was later taken away in a government vehicle to Chunar.

At least 10 people, including three women, died and over 24 were injured in a clash between Gond and Gujjar communities over a land dispute in Sonebhadra on Wednesday.

Even while she remained under detention, scores of Congress workers and locals gathered at the guest house to meet her with whom she held discussions on several issues.

The police have arrested 29 people, including the kingpin Yogesh Dutt, in connection with the violence in Sonebhadra. A case has been filed against 78 people.

Priyanka Gandhi joins #SareeTwitter, wants ‘dinner date’ with hubby

The #SareeTwitter trend that has been viral for the past couple of days got a huge boost on Wednesday after Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra shared a throwback picture from her wedding day.

Tens of thousands of people liked the photograph within hours that showed Priyanka Gandhi draped in a pink Banarasi saree.

“Morning puja on the day of my wedding (22 years ago!) #SareeTwitter,” read the caption of the photograph from the 47-year-old granddaughter of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

Even though she mentioned #SareeTwitter, many users mistook the day for her wedding anniversary and started wishing her happiness.

“Happy wedding anniversary @priyankagandhi stay blessed…I always trolled u but today No. Be happy always,” wrote one user.

But Priyanka Gandhi soon clarified that her anniversary falls in February and the post was just for #SareeTwitter.

“Thanks for all the anniversary wishes…but it’s just a throwback photo for the #SareeTwitter guys, my anniv is in Feb,” she tweeted.

“@irobertvadra, you can still take me out for dinner,” she said in another tweet addressed to her husband Robert Vadra.

The wink emoji at the end of the tweet revealed the lighter side of the Congress heavyweight.

The #SareeTwitter trend that began on Monday has already charmed India, generating posts from political leaders, film actresses, journalists and women.

Australian High Commissioner to India Harinder Sidhu also shared a saree picture on Tuesday.

“Now that @MaryKayCarlson has left Delhi, I am stepping up for my diplomatic sisters on #SareeTwitter. This saree was part of my Mum’s wedding trousseau. Yes, it’s older than me,” Sidhu wrote in the caption of the picture.

The U.S. Consul General in Hyderabad, Katherine Hadda, also flaunted her pictures draped in beautiful sarees.

And if you thought only women from India and abroad are posting their #SareeTwitter pictures, that is not entirely true.

Actor Ayushmann Khurrana joined the #SareeTwitter bandwagon by posting a picture of himself in a saree.

The post revealed a still from his upcoming film “Dream Girl”.

“#Dreamgirl later this this year. Sigh. #SareeTwitter,” read the caption of the post.

Rahul Gandhi’s visit is a clear indication that he has not given up on Amethi which used to be his family bastion till he lost the constituency to BJP’s Smriti Irani.

“Rahul has always treated Amethi as his family and he is coming to meet his family members. It is not a political visit,” said Congress MLC Deepak Singh.

The visit is designed to boost the morale of party workers who have sunk into the realms of despair after the Congress rout in the Lok Sabha polls.

Who let Masood Azhar out; Rahul Gandhi asks Modi, BJP

Pointing fingers at the BJP for being the one who allowed Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) chief Masood Azhar to return to Pakistan and carry out terror activities over the years, Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Saturday asserted his party will deal with terrorism sternly and strictly.

“Who sent him there (in Pakistan)? How he went there? Which government sent him? The BJP negotiates with terrorists and buckles under pressure. They bowed down before terror.

“It was not done by the Congress,” Rahul said amid Prime Minister Narendra Modi taking credit for Azhar being designated terrorist by world body UN, and terror strikes to wipe out terror launch pads across the border.

Addressing a mid-poll press conference here, the Congress leader said, “Masood Azhar is a terrorist and strict action should be taken against him.”

He also asserted that the Congress will never negotiate with terrorists.

“Terrorism has to be dealt with sternly,” he added.

He was responding to a question over Masood Azhar being declared a global terrorist by the United Nation Security Council.

The Modi government, while taking credit for getting Azhar blacklisted, should also tell the citizens that it was during a BJP regime that the JeM chief was released and he transformed into an even bigger threat to India, the Congress had said earlier on Thursday following the UN action.

Azhar was released from a prison in India in 1999, in exchange for 155 hostages held on an Indian Airlines flight that had been hijacked to Kandahar, Afghanistan. The terror lord then created a base for himself in Pakistan for two decades.

Rahul Gandhi accuses Modi of disrespecting armed forces

Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Saturday accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of disrespecting the country’s armed forces by comparing surgical strikes to video games.

Addressing a perss conference at the party office here, Gandhi said: “The Army is not a personal property of Modiji. Modi thinks the Indian Air Force, Navy and the Army are his personal properties.

“These surgical strikes were not carried out by Modiji, it was carried out by our forces. And if Modiji says that the earlier surgical strikes were not real surgical strikes and a video game, then he is not demeaning the Congress but he is disrespecting the armed forces.”

Gandhi also said that if the media needs record then its written here. General Vikram Singh has said the UPA government had carried out six surgical strikes between 2008 and 2014 and given out the dates of the surgical strikes.

“This has been done by the Amry and we don’t want to politicise it. And the Prime Minister must have respect for the armed forces,” he said.

The Congress President’s remarks comes a day after the Prime Minister while addressing a public meeting said that the party that questioned the surgical strikes is now saying “me too, me too”. Modi also said bitingly that “it is no video game”.

The Congress leader also said that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was losing in the ongoing Lok Sabha elections.

“More than half of the elections are over and there is clear cut feeling that Modiji is losing. Main issues in this elections are unemployment, corruption of Prime Minister. Our general assessment is clearly saying that BJP is losing the elections.

“The biggest issue in front of the people is unemployment and the economy ruined by Modi government is the biggest issue and the country and Rahul Gandhi wants to understand it. Rahul Gandhi is nothing. Country is the biggest thing.

“Modiji had said that he shall give employment to over two crore youths every year. While in Congress manifesto an entire chapter is about jobs. In this we have listed how we will do and what we will do,” he said.

Hitting out at the Prime Minister, Gandhi said: “Modiji’s entire system is to distract. We have fought four to five elections with him. We have fought against him in Gujarat, Rajasthan Madhya Pradesh Chhattisgarh. Soon he realises that he is not going to win then he shall bring sometyhing new like he brought sea plane in Gujarat.

“Reality is Modiji is losing the elections and its visible on his face,” he added.

‘Missing’ posters for Rahul Gandhi appear in Amethi

Posters claiming that Congress President Rahul Gandhi was ‘missing’ from his parliamentary constituency appeared overnight in Amethi, but were pulled down on the orders of the Returning Officer following complaints from the Congress party.

The posters carrying photographs of people, apparently from Amethi, asked: “15 years x 365 days = 5,475 days. Where was Amethi MP?”

It was not clear who got the posters printed and pasted across the constituency.

Interestingly, this was not the first time such posters appeared in Amethi. ‘Missing’ posters for Rahul Gandhi have appeared several times in his constituency in Uttar Pradesh.

Election Commission warns Maneka Gandhi over communal remarks

The Election Commission (EC) on Monday “strongly condemned” Union Minister Maneka Gandhi for her statement asking Muslims in Sultanpur in Uttar Pradesh to vote for her if they wanted her to get their work done after she wins from the constituency.

Ruling that her statements violated the model code of conduct (MCC) by making an appeal to “caste or communal feelings for securing votes” and also infringed the sections dealing with “bribery”, the poll panel warned her not to repeat “such misconduct in future”.

The EC had on April 15 barred Gandhi from campaigning in the ongoing Lok Sabha elections for 48 hours on account of her remarks.

Addressing an election rally in Turab Khani village, the BJP leader had said that she would not like it if she won without the support of the Muslims, and also may not get the work they required done after she wins.

Gandhi’s three-minute speech went viral on social media, leading to outrage for its “communal content”, with the Congress terming her statement “scandalous”.

However, Gandhi later maintained that her remarks were quoted out of context.

She is contesting from Sultanpur, a seat won by her son Varun Gandhi in 2014. Varun Gandhi is contesting this time from the Pilibhit constituency, from where his mother had won in 2014.

Supreme Court issues contempt notice to Rahul Gandhi

The Supreme Court on Tuesday issued a notice of criminal contempt to Congress President Rahul Gandhi.

The court turned down a plea to close the matter. The court will also hear a Rafale review on April 30 along with this.

BJP MP Meenakshi Lekhi moved the apex court seeking action against Gandhi over his ‘Chowkidar Chor Hai’ rant.

She sought time to file a reply to Gandhi’s affidavit against her contempt plea.

Senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi, appearing for Lekhi, said that the Congress President had exhibited a reckless attitude in making such statements.

Rahul Gandhi has lost credibility; Nirmala Sitharaman

Defence Minister and BJP leader Nirmala Sitharaman on Monday said Congress President Rahul Gandhi has lost his credibility after he expressed regret over his remarks on the Supreme Court’s order in the Rafale jet deal.

The apex court had asked the Congress President to respond on his remarks made last week wherein had attributed his “Chowkidar chor hai” remarks to the top court. Gandhi on Monday accepted that the “court never said these words.”

Addressing a press conference, Sitharaman said the Congress had diluted its stand on national security after its leader P. Chidambaram sought to change India’s behaviour toward Pakistan to normalise ties.

Coming down heavily on Gandhi, the Defence Minister said the regret expressed by him was done as part of “political convenience” and to avoid “contempt of court”.

“It was done to escape the wrath of the court…I would definitely say that it is a matter of credibility which is affected badly when people in public life are pushed to the circumstances to have to regret having said something based on untruth,” she said.

“Rahul Gandhi’s credibility has taken a beating. He keeps on repeating untruths. It is a matter of grief.”

Sitharaman said she felt “sorry” that the Congress was dependent on “falsehood”.

She asked the Congress to come clear on what behavioural change it wanted from the government in relation to Pakistan.

“Do they want us to stop taking action against terrorism? Do they want us to compromise on our territory? Do they want the government of India to state that Jammu and Kashmir is a disputed territory?” she said.

She said it was “astonishing” that senior Congress leader Chidambaram wanted a behavioural change.

Highlighting the Congress’ electoral promises of dilution of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) and sedition laws, Sitharaman said the party’s manifesto was criticised by people for being “terrorist-friendly”.

“They further diluted it by asking behavioural changes. It is surprising that such statements come from the Congress even during elections,” she added.

Priyanka Gandhi slams Modi government over OROP

Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi on Friday accused the Narendra Modi government of politicising the Armed Forces by calling the one rank one pension (OROP) a favour to them.

The Congress General Secretary was holding a roadshow while campaigning for his party’s Kanpur candidate Sriprakash Jaiswal here. She kicked off her roadshow from Ghantaghar area and concluded it at Bada Chauraha after covering a distance of five kms.

Addressing party supporters at the Phoolbagh crossing, she said, “When I was coming here from the airport, there were lots of posters and hoardings along the way. One of the hoardings that read ‘Sena ko OROP ka uphaar’ (OROP gift to the armed forces) got me thinking.

“Is the OROP really a gift and favour to the Armed Forces or is it their right? The right of the Armed Forces is being publicised as a favour by the government. What is this mentality and who will change it?” she asked the crowd.

She also targeted the Modi government over demonetisation. “They turned it into a mission of patriotism by telling you that it (demonetisation) will bring back black money. You all were made to stand in queues for the country. But the black money did not come back. On the contrary, a few industrialists benefitted from it,” she alleged.

The Congress leader also attacked the government for a flawed implementation of the goods and the services tax (GST), which she said had killed thousands of small businesses.

She urged the crowd raising slogans like “Priyanka nahi ye aandhi hai, doosri Indira Gandhi hai” to not compare her with her grandmother. “Please don’t humiliate me. I am nothing in front of her. You all know that… she made a sacrifice for the country.”

She added that she shared her grandmother’s will to serve the people. “Whether you give us a chance or not, we will keep serving you all,” she said.

Comparing her brother and Congress President Rahul Gandhi to Modi, Priyanka said, “One (Modi) does not have the strength to endure, while the other who is abused daily endures everything and keeps on smiling. This is called political will and confidence.”

Earlier arriving at the Fursatganj Airport in Rae Bareli, her mother and UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi’s parliamentary constituency in the morning, Priyanka travelled to Gauriganj by road for a meeting with her party workers as well as senior leaders of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and the Jan Adhikar Party (JAP) to discuss poll preparedness in the district.

A senior Congress leader told IANS: “BSP district chief Dilip Kumar and JAP district chief Vipin Kumar attended the five-hour long meeting and assured her all help in Amethi, where Rahul Gandhi is facing a stiff challenge from BJP’s Smriti Irani.”

Asked about the absence of Samajwadi Party (SP) leaders from the meeting, the Congress leader said that they will organise a meeting with Priyanka, the Congress in-charge for eastern Uttar Pradesh, on their own.

The BSP-SP-RLD alliance has not put up any candidate in the Amethi and Rae Bareli seats.

SP, BSP caused immense damage to UP; Rahul Gandhi

Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Thursday attacked the Samajwadi Party (SP) and the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), saying they are scared of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and they caused immense damage to the state during their rule.

Addressing an election rally here, Gandhi targeted Modi on a range of issues including jobs and problems faced by farmers.

He said the Congress used self-description of Modi as “chowkidar” and people responded to it with “chowkidar chor hai” slogan.

“But the leaders of SP and BSP don’t utter such words because they are scared of Narendra Modiji. We speak openly. If Narendra Modiji is a thief, then Congress and Rahul Gandhi will openly say in every meeting,” he said.

“SP, BSP and BJP have done immense damage to Uttar Pradesh. Once UP used to lead other states but these three parties devastated this state,” he said, adding that party leaders Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and Jyotiraditya Scindia are spreading the ideology of Congress in UP to pave the way for formation of a Congress government in the state in the next Assembly polls.

“We shall give such an outstanding government in UP that the whole country will look at it as model,” he said.

He accused Modi government at the Centre and Yogi Adityanath government in Uttar Pradesh of not fulfilling their promises.

“What has changed during the past five years? Modij had spoken lies to the people and today the reality has come before the people of the country,” he said.

Gandhi referred to Nyay scheme of the party that seeks to provide Rs 72,000 every year to the poorest 20 per cent of families.

He said that 15-30 industralists benefited due to waiver of loans by the government.

“The chowkidar took away money from your pockets by bringing in demonetisation and implementing Gabbar Singh Tax and put this money into the pocket of Anil Ambani,” he alleged, adding that the Congress will put the money in the pockets of the poor.

He accused the government of not arresting economic fugitives like Nirav Modi, Mehul Chowksi and Vijay Mallaya.

Gandhi said there are “two Indias”, with industrialists not being sent to jail for non-payment of outstanding loans. The Congress government will take a decision that no farmer will be sent to jail on account of non-payment of dues, he said.

“We want one India where everyone should treated in same manner and get Nyay,” he stressed.

Gandhi talked about the Congress promise of filling 22 lakh vacancies in the government sector in one year and said 10 lakh youth can be given employment in panchayats in the country.

He said the Congress has also promised that any youth wanting to start business can do so for three years without government permission. “Whosoever creates employment in UP, the government banks would open their gates to him.”

Referring to Modi making elaborate speeches on national security and nationalism, he said the biggest issue concerning national security is unemployment but the BJP leader does not address it.

Gandhi also said that nobody will go scot-free in Rafale deal controversy.

“The manner in which swift action was taken for farm loan waiver in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh, similar swift action will be taken in the Rafale scam and after due investigation, nobody will be spared.

“The moment an investigation is held in the Rafale scam, only the names of two chowkidars will surface — Anil Ambani and Narendra Modi,” he said.

Rahul Gandhi and Amit Shah make appeal to voters

Congress President Rahul Gandhi and Bharatiya Janata Party President Amit Shah on Thursday appealed to voters to exercise their electoral right as the second phase of Lok Sabha elections was underway.

“When you vote today, remember that you vote for Nyay,” Gandhi said on Twitter, referring to Congress’ minimum income guarantee scheme “NYAY”.

“Nyay for our unemployed youth; for our struggling farmers; for the small traders whose businesses were destroyed by demonetisation; for those who were persecuted because of their caste or religion,” he added.

Shah also took to Twitter to urge people to cast their votes, referring to the Balakot air strike by the Indian Air Force and anti-satellite missile launch “Mission Shakti”.

“New India of ours is setting higher benchmarks in every field, whether it be on earth, water, sky or even space.

“I appeal to all the voters in phase two, especially the young, that you must vote to keep this momentum going. In your one vote lies the country’s pride and progress,” Shah said.

Priyanka Gandhi attacks BJP for instructor’s suicide

Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi on Saturday attacked the BJP for its instructor’s suicide case in Uttar Pradesh saying that the ruling party had brought its employees to a position where they were forced to commit suicide.

“The incident of Banda is very sad. The BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) has brought the employees to the position that they are forced to commit suicide. The BJP has deceived the instructors and these hardworking employees are facing severe financial straits. The people of Uttar Pradesh will not forgive,” Gandhi tweeted.

Reportedly, Rajesh Kumar Patel, an instructor in a middle school in a village in Banda district in Uttar Pradesh, committed suicide on Wednesday night. He was struggling with financial straits as he was not paid honorarium from the last three months.
