Seattle, Indian team comes 2nd at Microsoft world contest

May 6  A team of Indian students was declared second runners-up at the Microsoft Imagine Cup world finals here on May 6.

The three-member team from Faridabad-based Manav Rachna Institute of Research and Studies developed “Caeli” (which means air in Latin) – a smart automated anti-pollution and drug delivery mask specifically designed for asthmatic and chronic respiratory patients.

The world championship was organised on the first day of the annual Microsoft Build conference here.

“Caeli” implements breakthrough features to improve the quality of life for respiratory patients living in polluted areas like in north India and especially in the Delhi and National Capital Region (NCR).

“At a time when air pollution is a big concern in various countries including India, we are collecting the real-time air pollution data that can be used by relevant stakeholders and the Indian government. They can integrate our application programme interfaces (APIs) into their projects and gain more insights,” Aakash Bhadana from the “Caeli” team had earlier told IANS.

Bhadana with Vasu Kaushik and Bharat Sundal developed the product under the guidance of Umesh Dutta and team at Manav Rachna Research Innovation and Incubation Centre (MRIIC).

Considered the “Olympics of Technology”, Imagine Cup is a global annual competition sponsored and hosted by Microsoft.

Over the past 10 years, more than 1.65 million students from over 190 countries have participated in the “Imagine Cup”.

Telecom tariffs to rise in Financial Year 20 2nd half; Report

Prices of telecom services are likely to rise in the second half of the current financial year (2019-20), an Edelweiss report said on Tuesday.

The probability of price hike can be attributed to the fact that the penetration in mobile broadband services has increased significantly and is nearing a saturation point.

“We estimate telecom operators to raise prices in H2FY20 as mobile broadband subscriber penetration reaches 65 per cent,” said the report titled “Telecom-Daylight Again”.

“Typically, in a market characterised by low penetration of services, providers’ quest for market share to gain economies of scale drives down prices, fuelling price wars. However, as investment requirements mount and relative attractiveness of balance market wanes, weaker players consolidate and participants start favouring pricing over incremental market share.”

On Reliance Jio, the Edelweiss report said that after 10 quarters since its launch and achieving 30 per cent of the revenue market share (RMS), “it is important to pause and take stock where the company stands now versus its objectives”.

“We believe that after achieving one of its key goals — 400 million subscribers in H2FY20 — Reliance JIO (RJIO) will hike prices to improve return ratios,” it said, adding that, JIO’s management, during its launch, had stated that one of its target is to achieve 400 million subscribers.

Regarding Bharti Airtel, the report observed that, with a strong balance sheet and adequate network investments, it is well placed to capitalise on industry recovery.

On the merged entity of Vodafone Idea, it said: “Although Vodafone Idea has higher operating and financial leverage from India’s telecom industry revival, we maintain our cautious stance considering underwhelming capacity expansion plans and weak data volume traction.”

“We continue to believe that RJIO will become India’s largest telecom operator led by the network’s high data capacity driving mobile broadband subscriber market share.”

Another report by UBS said that customer engagement and willingness to pay for the mobile apps is selectively increasing.

“Survey results also shows that about 55-60 per cent of Jio’s smartphone users engage with Jio’s app versus 35 per cent for Airtel and 25-30 per cent for Vodafone and Idea,” it said

The report, however said that advertisement rather than subscription might be the main revenue source from the content investments of the telecom operators.

2nd leg of WhatsApp campaign to fight fake news

Facebook-owned WhatsApp on Monday launched the second-leg of its “Share Joy, Not Rumours” education campaign to encourage the responsible use of its platform ahead of the Lok Sabha polls.

In addition to the earlier TV, print and radio ads, the new campaign would educate people on the controls available in WhatsApp so they are empowered to stop the spread of misinformation, the company said in a statement.

The first phase of the campaign successfully reached hundreds of millions Indians in both rural and urban areas, claimed the company, adding that the messaging platform is building on the campaign with a second round focused on supporting a safe election process.

“Proactively working with the Election Committee and local partners for a safe election is our top priority. Expanding our education campaign to help people easily identify and stop malicious messages is another step towards improving the safety of our users,” said Abhijit Bose, Head of India, WhatsApp.

WhatsApp’s digital literacy partners, including DEF and NASSCOM, would share these videos to grow awareness among the people while the print ads are aimed to act as reminders on how to spot, verify and stop sharing of misinformation that can cause harmful outcomes during the sensitive period of polling.

Over the last several months, WhatsApp has made a series of changes, including labeling forwarded messages to inform users when they have received something not from their immediate contacts and set a limit on how forwarded messages can be sent.

In addition, WhatsApp bans accounts that engage in unwanted automated activity.

WhatsApp, including other social media firms, will now have to process any request from the Election Commission of India to take down content within three hours during the 48-hour period before voting days.
